The Source of Art

These are some of my favorite quotes of the Sufi poet, Rumi, taken from longer poems. Each describes, in some strange way, where I think art and beauty and creativity come from.

In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest,
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do,
and that sight becomes this art.

What is the secret? “God is One.”

(I have written this next one on top of some of my longer, more challenging writing projects. It makes me laugh.)
     Start a huge, foolish project,

    like Noah.

     It makes absolutely no difference

    what people think of you.

At last you have departed and gone to the Unseen.

What marvelous route did you take from this world?

Now the words are over

and the pain they bring is gone. Now you have gone to rest

in the arms of the Beloved.
